Combined CIPS Gradient Survey

A further method of measuring these potential gradients is to complete a survey simultaneously to a CIPS survey. Using a Hexcorder Millennium model a second operator can walk parallel to the pipeline route and the gradient potential can be recorded along with all CIPS data. The instrument measures the gradients in both the CP On/Off condition allowing later calculation of delta potentials. As the spacing of the surveys is 1 metre and defect epicentres are not located it may be that the resultant calculations are not entirely representative of the defect size, the information obtained gives a very good indication of the coating and cathodic protection conditions in a single pass survey.

Like with all investigations and tests CIPS and DCVG can be used as diagnostic tools and the information recorded can be of real benefit to operators.
